His term as chair is due to end on May 23, 2026, and his term as governor is due to end on January 31, 2028. It is customary for outgoing chairs to resign their governor position at the same time or shortly after. On January 11, 2026, Powell made a [statement](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/powell20260111a.htm) relating to a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice against him, resisting claims of impropriety in connection with ongoing renovations to the Fed's headquarters.
