Resilience [is broadly defined](https://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol9/iss2/art5/) as "the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and reorganize while undergoing change so as to still retain essentially the same function, structure, identity, and feedbacks." Ecosystem [resilience](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_resilience), is the ability of an ecosystem to recover from a [disturbance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disturbance_\(ecology\)) without sustaining lasting damage to its essential character. Human infrastructure projects have had substantial, and often significantly negative, [impacts on the environment](https://www.biodiversityinfrastructure.org/handbook/1-infrastructure-effects/), but efforts to counteract or avoid such impacts are growing. Since 2024, the United Kingdom has had a policy of [biodiversity net gain](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/understanding-biodiversity-net-gain), under which development projects in wildlife habitats must result in a 10% gain in "biodiversity units." A [statutory biodiversity metric tool](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/statutory-biodiversity-metric-tools-and-guides) has been devised for performing the relevant calculations.
