Benin is [scheduled](https://www.dw.com/en/africa-2026-elections-guide-ethiopia-south-africa-ramaphosa-uganda-zambia/a-75558971) to hold its presidential election on April 12, 2026. The Constitutional Court [approved only two candidates](https://africacenter.org/spotlight/en-elections-2026/): Romuald Wadagni, backed by the ruling coalition (Bloc républicain and Union progressiste le renouveau), and opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè. Wadagni, who previously served as Minister of Economy and Finance, is widely seen as the frontrunner due to the backing of outgoing President Patrice Talon's political machinery.
