Totals include all goals in regular time and extra time (if played), but exclude penalty shootouts. The highest scoring World Cup match in history had 12 goals: Austria 7–5 Switzerland in 1954. Three matches have had 12 goals, with scorelines of 6–5, 8–3 and 10–1; the last of these is the only occasion on which a team has scored 10 or more goals in a single match, and one of three times a team has won by a 9-goal margin. The highest scoring match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup had 8 goals, when England beat Iran 6–2.
